CWSA 2005 ANNUAL REVIEW CONFERENCE STATEMENT, Busua Beach Resort, Busua, 3 – 7, April 2006

The Community Water and Sanitation Agency held its 2005 Annual Review Conference from Monday, 3rd to Friday 7th April 2006 at the Busua Beach Resort in the Western Region. This year’s annual conference was under the theme, “Adopting a Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) as a means to Accelerate Water and Sanitation Delivery for Improved Health and Productivity”.

Overview

The Community Water and Sanitation Agency held its 2005 Annual Review Conference from Monday, 3rd to Friday 7th April 2006 at the Busua Beach Resort in the Western Region.

This year’s annual conference was under the theme, “Adopting a Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) as a means to Accelerate Water and Sanitation Delivery for Improved Health and Productivity”. The choice of this theme reflects the growing need to harmonise approaches in the implementation of the National Community Water and Sanitation Programme (NCWSP) in the light of challenges of dealing with many stakeholders and development partners.

The sixty-five participants who attended the 2005 Conference included representatives from the Ministries of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Local Government and Rural Development, Health, Western Regional Co-ordinating Council, District Assemblies, National Development Planning Commission, CWSA (Head office and Regions), State Enterprises Commission, UNICEF, NGOs and Project Advisers and other invited guests.

Participants considered a number of issues in respect of the above objectives, including:

Participants took note of the marginal increase in coverage for rural and small town water supply from 51.7% in 2004 to a provisional 52.0% in 2005, as well as the several challenges that have hampered accelerated delivery.

In the keynote address, read on his behalf by the Deputy Minister, Hon. Cecilia Dapaah (MP), the Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing (MWRWH) urged the various partners to consider harmonising approaches in the delivery process.

Participants proposed the following actions for consideration by Government of Ghana (GoG) and its Development Partners.

Participants express their appreciation to the Deputy Minister MWRWH, Hon. Cecilia Dapaah (MP) for opening the conference and contributing to deliberations.

Participants also express their gratitude to the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Aidoo (MP), Hon. Kwesi Biney, Chief Executive, Ahanta West District Assembly, the Regional Water and Sanitation Team (Western Region) and their representatives for hosting and participating in the conference.
