The training was carefully designed to ensure effective knowledge transfer, employing learner-centred and adult learning methodologies. It utilized presentations, discussions, interactive lectures, and group exercises to educate participants on resilient Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services delivery. The content was structured to align with the IRC WASH Systems Academy online course, progressively building participants' understanding.
Sessions covered advocacy fundamentals, emphasizing the distinction between advocacy and influencing, and explored various advocacy approaches, including lobbying and crafting advocacy messages. Participants engaged in activities to identify advocacy issues, root causes, and evidence bases. They learned to develop advocacy goals, define target audiences, assess strengths and partnerships, and plan advocacy activities.
Complementing advocacy training, fundraising sessions introduced participants to fundraising concepts, such as the fundraising funnel and the funding landscape. They learned about different types of donors, approaches to fundraising, and networking strategies. Practical guidance was provided on developing pitches, responding to opportunities, and writing proposals.
The training concluded with remarks from CONIWAS, expressing gratitude for the support provided by IRC Ghana and encouraging few participants who had not completed the online course to do so and apply their newfound knowledge in practice.
In essence, the collaborative efforts of IRC Ghana and CONIWAS underscore a commitment to fostering sustainable WASH services through capacity strengthening and knowledge dissemination, by focusing on both advocacy and fundraising, the training has equipped participants with the essential tools to effectively champion the cause of universal WASH services in Ghana. This initiative not only promotes sustainable development but also empowers local organizations to take a proactive role in addressing the pressing WASH challenges facing their communities. As these trained individuals return to their work, the ripple effects of their enhanced capabilities are expected to contribute significantly towards achieving SDG 6 in Ghana.
