Vodafone Ghana today launched its Community Water Initiative in observance of World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22nd. The telecommunications giant alleviated the plight of 12 water–deprived communities and institutions by constructing 20 hand pump boreholes for use by its inhabitants free of charge.
The World Water Day ceremony was marked by the launch of boreholes in Adukrom within the Akuapem Northern District in the Eastern Region, Sibinso in the Assin South district in the Central region and Sang in the Yendi district of the Northern region, concurrently.
According to the Head of Corporate Communications of the company, Carmen Bruce-Annan, 'the aim of this initiative is to create opportunities for more efficient water management and improved access to drinking water and sanitation in deprived and underserved communities. It is also designed to support initiatives of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing in effectively managing and maintaining water and sanitation facilities.'
The communities which benefited from this initiative were interspersed within the 8 regions of Ghana. These included Nibasinia in the Upper East Region, UDS Campus and the Nabugang community in Upper West, the Santrokofi and Ntsumuru communities in the Volta region, Afutu Senior High School and the Sibinso community in the Central region, Akropong and Adukrom in the Eastern Region, Wassa Daboase in the Western region and Mataheko in the Greater Accra Region.
In his opening address Mr. Kyle Whitehill, CEO of Vodafone Ghana expressed that, 'Access to safe water is a fundamental human need and, therefore, a basic human right. Contaminated water jeopardizes both the physical and social health of all people yet clean water stills remains a luxury to many people. We believe this project will give Vodafone Ghana the opportunity to improve the lives of many Ghanaians in deprived areas. Vodafone is committed to support government's social intervention programmes by empowering Ghanaian communities to lead better lives.'
The initiative is also part of Vodafone's contribution to the attainment of Millennium Development (MDG) Goal 7; ensuring environmental sustainability by halving the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015.
